The Wild Bird Fund is a state and federally licensed 501(c)(3) that rehabilitates more than 4,000 sick, injured or orphaned wild animals and releases them back to the wilds of New York City. Yet New York is the only major city in the US that does not have a wildlife rehabilitation center. Many of these birds are injured by flying into buildings that have sprung up along their ancient migratory pathways, others by cat attacks, vehicles, and human interference.
